6.5 Grendel

The name "6.5mm Grendel" was a trademark owned by Alexander Arms™ until it was legally released to allow the cartridge to become SAAMI standardized. The 6.5mm Grendel design goal was to create an accurate and effective 200-800 yard AR-15 hunting cartridge. The objective was to surpass the performance of the native 5.56 NATO / 223 Remington cartridges and still utilize the AR-15 platform. Constrained by the length of the AR-15 magazine, the Grendel was designed with a shorter, larger diameter case for higher powder volume while allowing space for long, streamlined, high ballistic coefficient (BC) bullets. Firing A.A. factory loaded ammunition with bullets ranging from 90 to 129 grains, its muzzle velocity ranges from 2,500 ft/s with 129 grain bullets to 2,900 ft/s with 90 grain bullets. The most readily available factory ammo at this time is Hornady 123 grain A-MAX and SST. PPU has recently, since June 2015, released and economically priced 120 gr brass case ammunition. This is a sign that the Grendel cartridge is growing in popularity. Wolf Ammunition (Steel Case) and Alexander Arms™ do offer other weights of projectiles but is in limited quantities. For the people who load their own ammunition, the 6.5/.264 projectiles are readily available in many weights and compounds along with Lapua and Hornady brass.

All in all, the 6.5 Grendel is a high velocity, very coefficient round that has low recoil and is long range accuracy. Many bench shooters and target shooting enthusiasts prefer the Grendel for its sub moa accuracy with factory ammunition. For the hunters, some states do not allow game hunting with a .223/5.56 so the 6.5 Grendel fills that void. It has proven to be a great white tail deer and hog hunting caliber around the country.
